European cement moves towards net zero: Holcim expands production of eco-friendly materials

Europe’s cement industry is taking bold steps toward decarbonisation. In early October, Holcim announced a large-scale expansion of calcined clay cement production at its plants in France, Spain, and Germany. This innovative binder enables up to 50% CO₂ reduction compared to traditional clinker while maintaining high performance and durability. The initiative is part of Holcim’s Net-Zero Strategy, which targets full carbon neutrality by 2050.
CemNet: Scaling calcined clay for sustainable building

Holcim highlights that calcined clay lowers thermal energy consumption and reduces dependence on imported raw materials — a key advantage for Europe’s industrial resilience. Engineers are also developing new cement blends combining clay with Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) to create more efficient SCMs (Supplementary Cementitious Materials) for low-carbon construction.

At the same time, Cemsuisse reports that Swiss cement deliveries rose by 3% in Q2 2025 to 0.99 Mt, reflecting renewed demand for infrastructure and sustainable housing projects.
