Europe’s cement industry in focus: Heidelberg Materials launches evoZero®, while the EU prepares CBAM support

Heidelberg Materials begins deliveries of evoZero® cement

On 17 October 2025, Heidelberg Materials officially launched commercial deliveries of its innovative evoZero® cement — the world’s first carbon-captured cement now being supplied to clients across Europe. (CemNet)
The product features an exceptionally low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and is based on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology implemented at the company’s Brevik plant in Norway. Each batch is independently verified for climate neutrality. This milestone marks a clear step from strategy to action, showing that leading cement producers are now delivering on their decarbonisation commitments.

EU to create financial support mechanism for CBAM-affected countries

On 16 October 2025, the European Commission announced plans to establish a special development fund to support countries and industries impacted by the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) — a levy applied to imports with high carbon footprints, including cement and steel. (Reuters)
The fund aims to mitigate the short-term impact of CBAM on trade-exposed economies while encouraging higher environmental standards across industrial and energy sectors.

Cement Europe warns of political and policy challenges

According to the President of Cement Europe, the industry risks missing its Net Zero targets without stronger policy coordination and faster deployment of CCS technologies, alternative fuels, and low-carbon materials. (GMK Center)

Our Focus

At EASTGAS, we are already supplying our partners sustainable raw materials for the cement industry — namely Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) and Air-Cooled Slag (ACS).
These materials enable up to a 40% reduction in the carbon footprint of cement and concrete, fully aligned with the requirements of CBAM and the standards of the European Green Deal.
