European Slag Association: conference in Metz and focus on slag
The European Slag Association (EuroSlag) held a conference in Metz, France, where two speakers from the European Commission took a central role at the opening session. The main focus was on the role of slag in the circular economy, quality standards for slag-based materials, processing technologies, and the use of slag as a cementitious additive or as a component in building materials. Discussions also addressed the need to strengthen standards and certification to ensure slag’s acceptance across EU countries.

Our focus
At EASTGAS, we see in these developments strategic opportunities for the GBFS and ACS market:
- The Kodeco project demonstrates that major companies are investing in modernization and are ready to adopt technologies that reduce environmental impact — slag can play the role of a key additive or component in SCMs (Supplementary Cementitious Materials).
- The themes raised at the EuroSlag conference — standards, quality, certification — are critically important. For slag to be used in cement or concrete, it must meet norms, have consistent characteristics, and be widely available.
EASTGAS is ready to supply certified Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) and Air-Cooled Slag (ACS) that meet high standards and can help reduce the carbon footprint of cement and concrete by up to 40%, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, where such materials are not yet fully integrated.
