Two developments are shaping the cement market: Spain reports steady growth in domestic cement consumption, while Taiwan Cement Corporation (TCC) has announced a major acquisition in Ukraine.
Spain: cement consumption up 4.7% in January–August 2026
According to Oficemen, cement consumption in Spain reached 11.017Mt in the first eight months of 2026, an increase of 4.7% compared to the same period in 2025.
Despite the positive overall trend, the market shows signs of deceleration:
- July consumption fell by 1.6%
- August consumption fell by 5.2%
- Combined losses exceed 86,000t
On a rolling 12‑month basis (Sep 2025 – Aug 2026), consumption grew 9% to 17.15Mt, though growth is slowing. Exports dropped by 15.2% to 2.64Mt, reflecting weaker international demand.
Spanish producers continue modernising their production systems and increasing the use of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) and air‑cooled blast furnace slag (ACS) in low‑carbon cement blends. These materials help reduce the clinker factor and stabilise production costs amid market fluctuations.
TCC to acquire IFCEM in Ukraine for US$750m
Taiwan Cement Corporation (TCC) has announced plans to acquire Ukrainian cement producer IFCEM for US$750m. The deal includes the cement plant, limestone quarries and associated logistics assets.
IFCEM is one of Ukraine’s key cement producers. The acquisition will allow TCC to:
- strengthen its presence in Eastern Europe
- integrate IFCEM’s production into its global network
- expand its portfolio of low‑carbon materials
Market analysts expect TCC to invest in modernising IFCEM’s production lines, including milling systems and mineral‑component handling. In line with its global strategy, TCC typically increases the use of:
This acquisition aligns with TCC’s long‑term decarbonisation and efficiency goals.
